Mothers Who Know
Julie B. Beck
There is eternal influence and power in motherhood.
In the Book of Mormon we read about 2,000 exemplary young men who were exceedingly valiant, courageous, and strong. “Yea, they were men of truth and soberness, for they had been taught to keep the commandments of God and to walk uprightly before him” (Alma 53:21). These faithful young men paid tribute to their mothers. They said, “Our mothers knew it” (Alma 56:48).

There is much in the world right now that is polar opposite. The politics and the media are thriving on dividing and conquering the masses through messages of panic and paranoia. It is such a terrorism tactic.
In my own family there are people I love on both sides of the aisle and I can see the seed of truth on both sides but see how it has been magnified and blown all out of proportion to become something false and frightening.
As I have been thinking about it I have prayed and pondered often what the Lord thinks about it all. As both sides think they are righteous and hold to their side with religious fervor I have wondered if the Lord agrees with one or the other. I had the thought about Jesus's day and the Pharisees and the Sadducees. Political opposites who took the truths of the Torah and made it into polarizing opposites that made them enemies. I have wondered if the Left and Right of our day is not the same to the Lord and like the Jews of Jesus's day the enmity and division has made us miss the mark entirely on the truth of the gospel and the saving grace of Jesus Christ.
I have been thinking also about a story that was posted on Facebook
"An anthropologist showed a game to the children of an African tribe ...
He placed a basket of delicious fruits near a tree trunk and told them: The first child to reach the tree will get the basket.
When he gave them the start signal, he was surprised that they were walking together, holding hands until they reached the tree and shared the fruit!
When he asked them why you did that when every one of you could get the basket only for him!
They answered with astonishment: Ubuntu.
"That is, how can one of us be happy while the rest are miserable?"
Ubuntu in their civilization means: (I am because we are).
That tribe knows the secret of happiness that has been lost in all societies that transcend them and which consider themselves civilized societies ....... !!"
Because I have been reading Alma 50-52 and seeing the consequences of contention for the Nephites I have been wondering if we what we need more of is Ubuntu. Less competition and who is right and more love and caring for each other. More acknowledgement that we do not know it all or know what others need or are going through and more compassion and grace to allow the things we don't understand to be just that -- none of our business.
" We must remember that those mortals we meet in parking lots, offices, elevators, and elsewhere are that portion of mankind God has given us to love and to serve. It will do us little good to speak of the general brotherhood of mankind if we cannot regard those who are all around us as to our brothers and sisters. If our sample of humanity seems unglamorous or so very small, we need to remember the parable Jesus gave us in which he reminded us that greatness is not always a matter of size or scale, but of the quality of one’s life." Jesus the perfect leader- Pres Kimball I love this quote and the reminder that everyone we come in contact with is "our portion of humanity" we have a stewardship to love and bless. Especially those we run into when we are doing something else. I love the story shared in Oct 2021 conference about this very thing "As I pray for the Lord to open my eyes to see things I might not normally see, I often ask myself two questions and pay ...
Alma 37:6 Now ye may suppose that this is foolishness in me; but behold I say unto you, that by small and simple things are great things brought to pass; and small means in many instances doth confound the wise. I love this scripture and the idea that goes with it that small actions can change our lives. I know that this is true and real. I have seen it work over and over again in my life. Some Small things I have a testimony of - Prayer it doesn't take much time or effort, it doesn't cost any money anyone can do it for free. No matter where you are or even in your thoughts you can pray but huge miracles are wrought through prayer. It is a powerful small thing and I know it works!! -Scripture study, The power that flows into my life when I make time to study and ponder the words of God is immeasurable. I am buoyed up throughout my day and blessed to know the best direction and choices to make. -Family meals and family scripture study- These are times of great meaning and conn...
